Lawrence Williams has been involved in master planning projects for many years in Richmond. For five years Lawrence Williams was a committee member of the 9 person steering committee appointed by the Richmond City Council, The Richmond Tomorrow Strategic Planning Committee. During that time, the City was thoroughly accessed and recommendations for all levels of City bureaucracy were reviewed. Early planning studies for the City of Richmond include the Jackson Place Master Plan and the Hull Street Master Plan done in joint venture with national planning firms. Mr. Williams was a member of the steering committee appointed by the planning commission for the recent Downtown Master Plan. Past Clients include: The Southside Community Development Corporation, The Highland Park Community Development Corporation and Neighborhood Housing Services.
Present services include community planning studies for the Eastview Civic League including pedestrian trail parks in Shockoe valley north, complementing new commercial and housing. Committee involvement now includes Master Planning for the Shockoe Bottom Farmers Market Planning District. Mr. Williams is presently a founding board member of Ground Works RVA, a nonprofit nationally affiliated land conservation, park and greenway development organization, active in local disadvantaged communities.
Mr. Williams, the firm’s principal, is actively involved in every step of the early planning and project implementation process including project design. His practice has specialized in provided architectural services in under served Afro American communities, schools and church historic structures. The firm is well versed in local construction and regional building codes, life safety and handicapped codes. A team approach with other consulting Architects, Engineers and Local Contractors accomplishes what we call Value Engineering – Computing renovation and new construction pre-bid costs while setting priorities of work to be done when budgetary conditions dictate phasing of work.
One bit of advice that's stuck with him from architecture school is that in design, every detail must enhance the fundamental concept. It's an idea Williams has expanded into a guiding philosophy for work, life and community development. Articulating the fundamental concept, however, can be tricky. Williams uses intellectual shorthand that can clarify yet glorify the complex idea he's engaging. He talks about “the way Byrd Park works” and invokes the way the layout of the streets, buildings and houses cooperate with the shape of the land as a parallel for his vision of how the city should be designed.
